The El Paso Police Department's Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) unit is leading a multi-agency commercial motor vehicle safety operation on Transmountain Road in El Paso, Texas. On the first day, Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, inspectors did 11 CMV safety inspections and found 23 violations, seven of them out-of-service, according to a police media advisory dated Oct. 22. Texas DPS joined with commercial vehicle enforcement and roving patrols starting Oct. 22. KVIA reported the initiative was announced Oct. 20 after a deadly eight-vehicle crash that police said began when a semi's brakes failed.
The points
- 1First-day results (Oct. 21, 2026), per the El Paso Police Department media advisory: 11 CMV safety inspections, 23 total violations found, 7 out-of-service violations. Police said there were "no injuries during the first day of the operation."
- 2The advisory says the out-of-service violations were "serious enough to be classified as out-of-service, meaning the problem must be fixed before the vehicle or driver can continue."
- 3Partner agencies listed: El Paso County Sheriff's Office Traffic Section (general traffic enforcement); Texas Department of Public Safety ("commercial vehicle enforcement and roving patrols, starting Thursday, 10/22/2026"); El Paso County Constable's Office, Precinct 4 (intermittent enforcement through its STEP grant).
- 4Police say drivers "will see more law enforcement along Transmountain Road while the operation continues" and that "sometimes a lane may be closed so officers and drivers can work safely." EPPD "will share updated totals as the operation continues."
- 5KVIA reported that Mayor Renard Johnson announced the initiative Tuesday, Oct. 20, after a deadly eight-vehicle crash at Loop 375 and North Desert Boulevard; police said a semi's brakes failed before it went down the road. KVIA reported Sgt. Robert Gomez said the department has six certified inspectors and that vehicles deemed unsafe face Class C citations of up to $500.
Why it matters
Drivers running Transmountain Road should expect roadside stops, possible lane closures and a close look at brakes, lights, couplers and logs, KVIA reported. The advisory tells commercial drivers to "ensure their vehicles, equipment, and paperwork are in compliance before traveling," and police haven't announced an end date for the operation.
